Fructofin® fructose has a GI or glycaemic index of 19 and is therefore classified as low glycaemic as it is metabolised, for the most part, independently of insulin. Fructofin® fructose is therefore suitable for diabetics and those following a reduced GI diet. Studies have shown that glucose levels of diabetics are better controlled on a fructose diet than on sucrose or starch diets.
A joint review of the available data on the use of carbohydrates in human nutrition by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) endorsed the consumption of low GI foods. The same organizations also recommended that, to help prevent common diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and obesity, people in industrialized countries should base their diets on low-GI foods.
Fructofin® fructose can help in the development of bakery, dairy and beverage products that elicit a reduced glycaemic response without compromising taste. The low GI properties of Fructofin® fructose also lend themselves to sports beverages, meal replacements and cereals as they help provide a sustained source of energy.
Glycaemic index of 19
With a low GI, Fructofin® fructose can be consumed to improve glycaemic control.
Suitable for diabetics
Fructofin® fructose has very little effect on blood glucose and has a negligible effect on the secretion of insulin. It can offer important advantages in the practical dietary management of diabetes, particularly non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes.
